Educational Objectives
The discipline of Management Science and Engineering (Master’s Degree in Engineering) aims to cultivate high-level professional talents with all-round development of morality, intelligence, and physique, high quality of construction management, reasonable knowledge structure, and strong ability to analyze and solve problems. Specifically, capabilities include grasping the basic theories and professional and wide knowledge of the discipline, reading the professional literature written in a foreign language, mastering advanced techniques to solve problems in construction management, as well as being able to innovate, independently undertake construction management or specialized technical work, and engage in scientific research and teaching.
Research Areas
The discipline of Management Science and Engineering includes three research areas: (1) construction project management; (2) urban economics and real estate market; and (3) sustainable construction.
Supervisor Team
This discipline involves a strong team of supervisors, including 4 professors, 12 associate professors, and 9 lecturers (assistant professors). Over 80% of them hold a Ph.D. degree and about one third have studied abroad. Some teachers have obtained various professional certificates (15 are certified consultant engineers and 8 are certified cost engineers). They closely cooperate with enterprises. In addition, more than 10 well-known scholars globally in this field, such as Prof. Patrick Xiaowei Zou, serve as visiting professors.
Prof. Jiayuan Wang is a member of the Higher Education Construction Management Evaluation Committee of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD), a member of the Expert Committee of Construction Supervision and Project Management Strategy Development of the MOHURD, and the deputy director of the Building Internet and BIM Professional Committee of the Chinese Society for Urban Studies. Currently, he is the principal investigator for a General Program project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
Prof. Jian Liu, the director of the Ecological Technology Institute of Construction Engineering, Shenzhen University and a member of the Professional Committee of Wind and Tidal Power Generation of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering, has completed more than 20 provincial research projects.
Associate Prof. Botong Song, the vice president of the Shenzhen Housing Research Association, a council member of the China Association of Higher Education Real Estate Academicians, and a housing policy expert of the MOHURD, has completed several research projects which were funded by the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, the Ministry of Education, and so on.
Associate Prof. Zhikun Ding has been recognized as Overseas High-Caliber Personnel in Shenzhen, High-Level Talent in Nanshan District of Shenzhen, and excellent supervisor of Shenzhen University, and serves as an executive member of the Council of the Chinese Research Institute of Construction Management. He has been the principal investigators for two projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, one project supported by the Ministry of Education, one project funded by the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province, and two projects supported by the Shenzhen Basic Research Program.
Associate Prof. Gang Wang, a member of the Project Cost Committee of the Building Economy Branch of the Architectural Society of China and a bid evaluation expert of Shenzhen Construction Project Exchange Service Center, has completed a number of projects funded by the MOHURD and the Housing and Development Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality.
Associate Prof. Huabo Duan, recognized as Overseas High-Caliber Personnel in Shenzhen and Outstanding Young Scholar of Shenzhen University, has completed the research projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Fok Ying-Tong Education Foundation, and so on.
Curriculum
The core courses include Advanced Operations Research, Statistics and Prediction, Frontiers of Construction Management, Urban Planning and Economics, Management Research Methods, Management Systems Engineering, Real Estate Development and Market Research, and so on.
Education Resources
The supporting research institutions of this discipline mainly include the Sino-Australia Joint Research Center in BIM and Smart Construction, the Construction Supervision Institute, the Real Estate Research Center, the Ecological Technology Institute of Construction Engineering, with nearly 40 off-campus internship bases. Due to its geographical advantage, the discipline keeps close contact with overseas (especially Hong Kong) academia, and has successfully held 14 academic seminars for master students on construction management and real estate. This is conducive to broadening the students’ horizons and enhancing their development prospects, including overseas academic exchange and doctoral studies. Meanwhile, the students have the opportunity to study in the construction management summer school of Tsinghua University. Our department is fairly self-contained, such as dedicated offices and seminar rooms for the students, a high-level BIM laboratory, a convenient campus network and WIFI, libraries, plenty of professional software, and so on.
Reward System
(1) Excellent students such as those exempt from the admission exam are offered a freshman scholarship of 15,000 RMB. All students can receive national subsidies of 8,000 RMB each year;
(2) There is a reward system composed of academic scholarships, excellent student cadres, and excellent graduates;
(3) The Education Foundation for Civil Engineering, Shenzhen University has a fixed fund every year to reward the top students with both academic and moral qualities;
(4) The students serving as assistants are paid according to their workload in a weekly manner; and
(5) The school provides dream-building scholarships for eligible fresh students.
Educational Characteristics
The education of the students follows the principles: (1) rooting in Shenzhen, serving the country, and facing the world; (2) combining theories with practices; (3) catering to the needs of both industry practices and academic research; and (4) building a global mindset. Outstanding alumni of this discipline include, but not limited to: (1) Mr. Xueqin Deng, graduated in 1989, is currently the chairman of Genzon Property Group Co., Ltd.; and (2) Mr. Yibiao Li, graduated in 1993, is currently the chairman and president of Coastal Group.
Career Prospects
Our graduates have found employment in a wide range of private and public sector organizations. They generally work in large and medium-sized real estate companies, government departments, and large consulting companies, as well as pursue doctoral degrees in famous domestic and foreign universities or research institutes.
