The Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Deep Earth Sciences and Geothermal Energy Exploitation and Utilization was founded by Prof. Heping Xie, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2019 and officially approved by Department of Science and Technology of the Guangdong Province.
The laboratory is committed to research in “Deep Earth Sciences” and “Geothermal Energy Development and Utilization”, aiming for solving the scientific problems in deep geoscience exploration and geothermal energy exploration and utilization. By taking advantages of advanced instruments for deep coring and testing system retaining the in-situ geological conditions, the laboratory dedicates to solve the key problems of "in situ" deep rock mechanics, develop deep rock mechanics theory retaining the in-situ geological conditions, and innovate technologies for dynamic rock mechanics under in-depth disturbance by developing new theories and fundamental data for deep earth engineering and science in the laboratory. The laboratory also focuses on cutting-edge thermoelectric material science, magnetic levitation technology, thermovoltaic-powered motors, etc., aiming to pave the way for medium-low temperature geothermal utilization and lunar-based energy solution, encouraged by multi-disciplinary research with fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, electromagnetics, etc.
Currently, the laboratory consists of 29 academic faculties, including 7 full professors, 4 Associate Professors (Research Associates), 10 Assistant Professors (Lectures) and 15 postdoctoral researchers. Of the faculties, there is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one winner of the “National Natural Science Foundation Outstanding Youth Fund”, and one winner of the “100 Talents Plan” in Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Over the past three years, the laboratory has published more than 100 SCI-indexed papers and initialed 30 provincial/national research projects, including the National Science and Technology Commission's major scientific research instrument development project (No. 51827901, 77.130 million), the Ministry of Science and Technology's major R&D project (No. 2016YFC0600700, 51.693 million), and 3 other national key R&D projects and 17 National Natural Science Foundation projects, including 2 National Natural Science Foundation Outstanding Youth Funds and 2 key projects of major projects. In recent years, the faculty members have won the second and third prizes of the National Natural Science Award, the second and third prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, five first prizes of the Ministry of Education, and the first "China Young Scientist Award (Technical Science )", Sun Yueqi Energy Award, He Liang He Li Foundation Science and Technology Progress Award and many other awards.
