Laboratory Overview
The Key Laboratory for Geo-Environmental Monitoring of the Greater Bay Area, Ministry of Natural Resources, hereinafter referred to as the “Laboratory,” is led by Shenzhen University and jointly established with the participation of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Guangzhou University, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Professor Li Qingquan serves as Director of the Laboratory. The Laboratory currently has more than 50 research personnel and over 100 postgraduate students.
Historical Development
The Laboratory was formerly known as the Key Laboratory for Geo-Environmental Monitoring of Coastal Zones, National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation. It was approved for establishment by the former National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation in 2013 and passed its official acceptance review in 2017. In January 2020, in accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Natural Resources, it was renamed the Key Laboratory for Geo-Environmental Monitoring of the Greater Bay Area, Ministry of Natural Resources.
Research Positioning and Directions
The Laboratory focuses on fundamental research concerning geo-environmental monitoring and human–environment interactions in the Greater Bay Area under the combined pressures of global change and human activities. It has established a comprehensive research system covering theoretical development, methodological innovation, technological advancement, and the practical application of research outcomes, thereby contributing to the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature.
Its principal research areas include new remote-sensing data and methodologies, geo-environmental monitoring and assessment, disaster-risk monitoring and early warning, and regional sustainable development.
Research Facilities
The Laboratory is equipped with advanced experimental facilities and research infrastructure. Its major professional equipment includes dual-band LiDAR systems, high-resolution ground-object spectrometers, integrated land–water surveying and mapping systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, underwater hyperspectral profiling instruments, and more than ten other large-scale specialized systems.
Research Achievements
In recent years, the Laboratory has published more than 400 academic papers and received numerous national, provincial, and ministerial-level science and technology awards. It has also achieved a series of influential and original research outcomes in scientific investigation and major engineering applications related to geo-environmental monitoring in the Greater Bay Area.
