Name of the Research Platform

Shenzhen University–Budapest University of Technology and Economics Joint Laboratory on Renewable Energy and Resilient Intelligent Infrastructure

Date of Establishment

The Joint Laboratory was officially established on May 16, 2026.

Laboratory Overview

Shenzhen University (SZU) and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) formally established the Joint Laboratory on Renewable Energy and Resilient Intelligent Infrastructure on May 16, 2026, marking a new milestone in China–Hungary scientific and educational cooperation.

The Joint Laboratory is led on the Chinese side by Academician Chen Xiangsheng, with Professor Fei Jianbo and Assistant Professor Kato Bence serving as Deputy Directors. On the Hungarian side, the Laboratory is directed by Associate Professor Mahler András.

The distinguishing characteristic of the Joint Laboratory is its integration of renewable energy systems, infrastructure resilience, and intelligent digital technologies within a unified research framework. Rather than treating these fields as separate disciplines, the platform combines them through a mechanism-driven approach that supports both fundamental scientific discovery and translation into large-scale engineering applications.

Vision and Mission

The Joint Laboratory is established to serve strategic national and regional development priorities, strengthen China–Hungary cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, and bridge frontier scientific research with practical engineering applications.

The primary research and development platform will be located at Shenzhen University, while BME will contribute through talent development, researcher mobility, student exchange, and joint educational programs. Together, the two institutions aim to create an internationally recognized research hub that integrates renewable energy, infrastructure resilience, and intelligent digital technologies.

Research Areas

The Joint Laboratory will promote collaborative research and technology transfer in the following key areas:

· Wind, solar, and deep geothermal energy infrastructure design

· Digital twins and intelligent construction technologies

· AI-driven surrogate models and geotechnical engineering design

· Natural hazard assessment, monitoring, and risk management

· Seismic and typhoon resilience of energy infrastructure

· Real-time intelligent monitoring and early warning systems for major infrastructure

· Low-altitude economy and supporting infrastructure systems

Cooperation Mechanism

To ensure sustainable long-term development, the Joint Laboratory has established a dedicated management committee responsible for coordinating research activities, international cooperation, and operational management. Key cooperation mechanisms include:

· Joint applications for Chinese, Hungarian, and European research funding programs

· Mutual researcher and student exchange programs

· Joint postgraduate supervision and talent cultivation

· Shared data resources, experimental facilities, and computational infrastructure

· Co-organization of international conferences, workshops, and academic lectures

Research Work Packages

Current collaborative activities are organized around five strategic work packages:

1.Multi-Source Infrastructure Data Fusion and Digital Twin Foundations

Development of integrated data frameworks and next-generation digital twin platforms for critical infrastructure systems.

2.Disaster Simulation and Resilience Assessment Driven by Digital Technologies

Advanced modelling and simulation of natural hazards and infrastructure resilience under multi-hazard conditions.

3.Intelligent Risk Identification and Digital Safety Management

AI-enabled approaches for infrastructure health monitoring, risk assessment, and lifecycle management.

4.EU–China Standards Integration, Technology Transfer, and Demonstration

Cross-border collaboration on design and data standards, technology transfer pathways, prototype validation, and industrial deployment.

5.Development of the China–Hungary Joint Laboratory on Digital Infrastructure

Advancement toward the establishment of a Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) China–Hungary Joint Laboratory focused on digital infrastructure innovation.

A Unique International Platform

The distinguishing characteristic of the Joint Laboratory is its integration of renewable energy systems, infrastructure resilience, and intelligent digital technologies within a unified research framework. Rather than treating these fields as separate disciplines, the platform combines them through a mechanism-driven approach that supports both fundamental scientific discovery and translation into large-scale engineering applications.

By bringing together complementary expertise from Shenzhen University and BME, the Joint Laboratory aims to become a leading international platform for innovation, talent cultivation, and technological advancement. More than a research facility, it represents a long-term bridge between China and Hungary, fostering collaborative solutions to the energy, infrastructure, and sustainability challenges of the future.
