Green Concrete Materials and Carbon-Neutral Technologies
This research direction focuses on the development of environmentally friendly concrete materials and key technologies for reducing and neutralizing carbon emissions throughout the lifecycle of construction materials and infrastructure.
Service-Life Assurance Materials and Intelligent Operation and Maintenance Technologies
This direction investigates advanced materials for ensuring the durability and service performance of infrastructure, together with intelligent technologies for condition monitoring, maintenance decision-making, and lifecycle operation and management.
Recycling and Efficient Utilization of Construction Resources
This direction focuses on the recycling, conversion, and high-efficiency utilization of construction waste and other secondary resources, with the aim of reducing dependence on natural construction materials and mitigating environmental pollution.
Laboratory Overview
The Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Low-Carbon Building Materials and Technologies is a municipal key laboratory approved forandestablishmentestablishedin 2022by the Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation CommissionBureauin 2022.
Responding to China’s major strategic needs for green and low-carbon development, the Laboratory addresses the dual challenges of shortages ofconstruction resourceshortagess and severewaste-inducedenvironmental pollution caused by waste generatedduring infrastructure development in Shenzhen. Guided by the coordinated development of resource, environmental, economic, and social benefits, the Laboratory conducts research from a lifecycle perspective on major coastal infrastructure.
Its research focuses on three principal areas: green concrete materials and carbon-neutralitytechnologies, service-life assurance materials and intelligent operation and maintenance technologies, and the recycling and efficient utilization of construction resources. The Laboratory also seeks to formulate design standards for low-carbon building materials suitedapplicableto the environmental and engineering conditions of China’s coastal regions, particularly Shenzhen. These standards will provide a scientific and technological basis for the design, production, and application of low-carbon concrete in various engineering sectors across the city.
The Laboratory is committed to promoting the large-scale coordinated treatment and resource recovery of solid waste in Shenzhen. Through these efforts, it aims to address simultaneously the shortage of construction resources and the environmental impacts of waste disposal, thereby supporting the city’s green, low-carbon, and sustainable development.
Ultimately, the Laboratory seeks to establish a research and technology application platform that serves the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, extends its influence throughout the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, demonstrates distinctive leadership within China, and achieves international recognition in relevant research fields.
WithProfessor Dong Biqin servinges astheDirector of the Laboratory, i. It currently has 25 permanent research staff members, including one member of the Engineering Academy of Japan, two specially appointed experts under a national overseas high-level talent program, one recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, one recipient of the Excellent Young Scientists Fund, and one recipient of the Guangdong Provincial Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.
