Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Civil Engineering Durability

Research Team

The Laboratory currently has 50 permanent research staff members, including 25 professors and 12 associate professors. Among them, 47 hold doctoral degrees and 40 have more than one year of overseas study or research experience. The full-time faculty team includes one member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one Japanese member of the Engineering Academy of Japan, three recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars who were cultivated within the Laboratory, one nationally recruited distinguished expert, one leading talent under the National High-Level Talent Special Support Program, one Changjiang Scholar, three recipients of the Excellent Young Scientists Fund, and three recipients of the Excellent Young Scientists Fund Program (Overseas).

The Laboratory also has seven full-time research fellows, 34 postdoctoral researchers, and ten technical and administrative staff members.

Research Development and Academic Strengths

The Laboratory’s research team was among the earliest in China to devote particular attention to the durability of civil engineering structures in coastal environments. Under the guidance of Academician Zhou Fulin, who served as Chair of two successive terms of the Academic Committee, and with Academician Xing Feng serving as the chief academic leader, the Laboratory has developed a comprehensive research strategy and technical roadmap based on the theoretical framework for the service-life design and redesign of civil engineering structures.

The development of this research framework has been strongly supported by 37 major national research projects, including projects funded by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the National Basic Research Program of China, major international science and technology cooperation programs, key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and key projects under national–provincial joint funds. It has also been supported by 146 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and 95 research projects funded at the provincial, ministerial, and municipal levels.

With the comprehensive utilization of resources and the development of sustainable advanced materials serving as major research drivers, the Laboratory has continuously improved fundamental methods for the reliability analysis, deterioration identification, and performance control of coastal concrete infrastructure. It has achieved a series of innovative research outcomes concerning the mechanisms of performance deterioration, control theories, and engineering applications of coastal concrete structures.

Research Projects and Funding

Since its establishment, the Laboratory has led 183 publicly funded research projects and 33 industry-sponsored research projects. Its cumulative research funding has exceeded RMB 200 million, with average annual research funding of more than RMB 18 million.

Publications, Standards, and Intellectual Property

The Laboratory has published more than 2,000 academic papers in leading domestic and international journals and conference proceedings. Of these, 1,749 papers have been indexed by the Science Citation Index, including more than 1,200 papers published in journals ranked in JCR Quartile 2 or above. It has also published 19 academic monographs.

The Laboratory has led the preparation of five local technical specifications and has participated in the formulation of 22 national and industry technical codes and standards. It has obtained 300 authorized invention patents, including 19 international patents.

Awards and Engineering Applications

The Laboratory has received two Second Prizes of the State Technological Invention Award, 16 provincial- and ministerial-level science and technology awards, five international invention awards, and 16 municipal- or professional-association-level science and technology awards.

Its principal research achievements have been widely applied in major engineering projects in Guangdong Province and Shenzhen, including Yantian Port, the Shenzhen Western Corridor, Shenzhen Airport, the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant, the port-access road system in the western port area of Shenzhen Port, and the Shenzhen Eastern Corridor.
