On November 21, 2024, from 19:00 to 21:00, Academician Xie Heping of our institute gave a public lecture on "Introduction to Civil Engineering" to the 2024 freshmen in the lecture hall A431 of Zhigong Building. The lecture was presided over by Vice Dean Yang Lei of the college.

The open course of "Introduction to Civil Engineering" is divided into two sections, with the course content progressing from shallow to deep. It not only covers the goals, development history, and future directions of civil engineering, but also introduces classic civil engineering cases at home and abroad, patriotic deeds of famous scholars, and stimulates students' research enthusiasm by introducing advanced international scientific research.

In the previous section "Civil Engineering - Interdisciplinary Engineering Science", firstly, through the definition of civil engineering in Chinese and foreign history, it is pointed out that civil engineering is "the art of utilizing great natural resources for the benefit of humanity"; Secondly, taking the creation of important core theories in civil engineering, the invention of key experimental methods, and the analysis of important engineering cases as examples, the history of the continuous integration and development of civil engineering with various disciplines such as mechanics, materials, environment, humanities, art, artificial intelligence, and philosophy, following the footsteps of human civilization, is described; Once again, through the example of renowned scientist Qian Weichang, ideological and political education was carried out for the students; Finally, the development of civil engineering in ancient, modern, and contemporary times was summarized, and advanced cases were used to showcase the future prospects of civil engineering for students.

In the second session of the open class, "Future Civil Engineering Towards Deep Earth, Deep Sea, and Deep Space", combined with China's "Deep Earth, Deep Sea, and Deep Space" technology strategy and cutting-edge scientific research of our institute, we introduced to students the principles and technologies of deep earth science and deep fidelity coring and exploration, deep-sea combustible ice pressure insulation and coring, and civil engineering issues in the development and utilization of lunar material resources. Academician Xie started by interpreting the national strategy of "deep earth, deep sea, and deep space", introducing the history and necessity of deep earth, deep sea, and lunar resource development, and showcasing our institute's scientific research in related fields to the students.

Finally, Academician Xie Heping sends a message to young teachers and students: we must closely focus on the major strategic needs of the country, boldly explore and innovate, become talents with interdisciplinary knowledge, learn, master, apply knowledge, and ultimately create knowledge.

The open class of "Introduction to Civil Engineering" ended with applause from all teachers and students. More than 200 teachers and students from our college participated in the learning and received widespread praise from them.
