讲座题目:Discrete Element Methods – Principles and Applications

时间地点:2016年9月28日上午9:30-11:30,土木工程学院C501会议室

Professor Chuan-Yu (Charley) Wu

Department of Chemical and Process Engineering

University of Surrey, United Kingdom

Abstract. The discrete element method (DEM), also known as the distinct element method, was first developed by Cundall and Strack in 1970s, with initial applications in soil mechanics and geotechnical problems. Since then, DEMs have been advanced by many researchers and have been used extensively in a number of fields to study the micromechanics, dynamics and physics of granular materials. In DEMs, granular materials are modelled as an assembly of a number of individual solid particles, of specified geometry, which interact with each other through prescribed interaction laws. In this talk, the principle of DEM will be introduced. The recent advances in this numerical method will also be presented, including modeling of gas-solid or liquid-solid systems using the coupled DEM with computational fluid dynamics (i.e. DEM-CFD), and real shaped particles. Typical applications of DEM and DEM-CFD will be illustrated and the limitations of these methods will then discussed.

Brief Bio. Prof. Chuan-Yu (Charley) Wu is a professor in Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Surrey. UK. He obtained his BSc and MSc in Civil Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and his PhD. on finite element analysis of particle impact problems from the Department of Civil Engineering at Aston University (Birmingham, UK) in 2002. He worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the Department of Engineering in the University of Leicester from 2001 to 2003, and at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy in the University of Cambridge between 2003 and 2005. In November 2005, Prof. Wu was awarded a prestigious EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship and joined the University of Birmingham. He was appointed as a senior lecturer in the School of Chemical Engineering at Birmingham in December 2008 and a professor in chemical engineering at the University of Surrey in January 2013.

Prof. Wu is currently an executive editor for Powder Technology, a leading peer reviewed journal on particle systems. He recently co-authored a monograph on “Particle Technology and Engineering” published by Elsevier in 2016 and edited two books entitled “Discrete Element Modelling of Particulate Media” and “Particulate Materials: Synthesis, Characterisation, Processing and Modelling” published by RSC publishing. He also edited five journal special issues and published over 100 scientific papers. He has given more than 30 invited presentations and seminars at international conferences, industrial companies and universities worldwide. Prof. Wu is a member of the advisory and editorial board for “Particuology”, “Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B (APSB) ” and “Journal of Engineering”.

Prof. Wu has expertise in discrete element methods, finite element analysis, modelling and simulations, pharmaceutical engineering, particle technology and granular dynamics. Prof. Wu has been working closely with global companies over the last 15 years in developing advanced numerical modelling techniques for manufacturing pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. His research has been supported by global pharmaceutical companies including Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Sanofi and MSD, in addition to EPSRC and EU.
