Civil Engineering (Mathematics & Mechanics Innovation Program)

Introduction

This program is headed by Academician Xie Heping of the Chinese Academy of Engineering as Class Director, with Academician Zheng Quanshui of Tsinghua University serving as Chief Scientist. Aimed at the frontiers of science and engineering, the program implements an integrated, cross-disciplinary training model that combines a solid foundation in mathematics and mechanics with multidisciplinary expertise, cultivating innovative talents equipped with scientific thinking, independent creativity, international vision, and engineering capability. It strengthens training in the applied use of mathematics and mechanics, with particular emphasis on developing students' ability to solve engineering problems and conduct scientific exploration based on fundamental principles. Led jointly by two academicians and operating under a mentorship system, the class encourages undergraduates to design their own study plans and take courses across majors, disciplines, and schools. Doctoral students provide one-on-one guidance to undergraduates of the Mathematics and Mechanics Innovation Class in conducting research, reinforcing their ability to apply mathematics and mechanics and to carry out scientific research. The class currently has a team of 28 mentors, including 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 foreign academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 3 academicians of the engineering academies of the United States, Australia, and Japan, and 16 recipients (person-times) of national-level talent programs. The program aims to achieve a further-education (graduate study) rate of 80% among its graduates. Cooperation agreements have been signed with the National University of Singapore, Missouri University of Science and Technology (USA), Monash University (Australia), the University of Tokyo (Japan), and other institutions. The class also collaborates closely with X-Institute, carrying out joint international undergraduate training and exchange programs.

Core Courses

Advanced Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Structural Mechanics, Numerical Methods, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, Fluid Mechanics, Finite Element Analysis, Numerical Analysis, Theory of Elasticity, Python Programming, Methods of Mathematical Physics, Soil Mechanics, Deep Earth Energy Utilization, Theoretical Mechanics, Rock Mechanics, and Mathematics and Mechanics Research Practice.

Prospect

Graduates are primarily employed in fields related to civil engineering, energy, mechanical and electrical engineering, information technology, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and big data, where they can engage in engineering-related research and technological development; they may also pursue careers in scientific research and management at institutions of higher education, research institutes, and government agencies. Prospective employers include universities and research institutes at home and abroad, as well as Fortune Global 500 companies such as Tencent, Huawei, and BYD.
